If you’re an adventure seeker and love a good thrill, I have the place for you: New Smyrna Beach, located in Volusia County, Florida. Just south of Daytona Beach, New Smyrna makes for the perfect vacation spot if you love the beach and playing in the waves! Plus, they have amazing walk-around shopping centers for those who aren’t as drawn to the water.

Sharks

One of my favorite things about New Smyrna is that it’s known as the Shark Bite Capital of the World. There’s something exhilarating about swimming in the same waters where these magnificent creatures roam. While some may feel uneasy, the risk of a shark encounter is actually slim. As someone with a lifelong passion for sharks, I find it fascinating that so many of them gather here. I’ve always wanted to see one up close—it’s the mystery of the unknown that calls to me.

Why Are the Sharks Here?

Why do sharks favor this area? The waters around New Smyrna Beach are rich with prey, such as mullet and menhaden, which attract sharks. The Inlet, in particular, is a hot spot, with about 35% of shark encounters occurring within 800 meters of it. Additionally, Florida’s warm waters make it a comfortable environment for these animals year-round.

How Often Is an Attack?

New Smyrna has seen more shark bites than anywhere else, but the actual numbers are modest compared to the thousands of people who enjoy these waters daily. Since the 1880s, there have been around 300 recorded incidents, with five attacks reported in 2023. Importantly, there has yet to be a fatal attack on New Smyrna Beach, which says a lot about the actual risk level.

Is It Safe?

While New Smyrna Beach is generally safe, a few precautions can add peace of mind. Avoid swimming at dawn or dusk, steer clear of fishing areas, don’t go past waist-deep water, and avoid wearing shiny jewelry. Visibility is limited here, and sometimes sharks mistake surfers or swimmers for prey. However, you’ll often find surfers braving the waves at dawn and dusk, when the experience is at its peak.

What Kind of Sharks Are in New Smyrna?

New Smyrna is home to various shark species, including blacktips, spinners, bulls, and sandbars. Although bull sharks are known to be more aggressive, the majority of sharks in this area aren’t particularly large. Blacktip sharks, which often swim in shallower waters, are the most likely to be involved in encounters, but their smaller size helps minimize the risk of serious injury.

Remember, you’re in their territory, so it’s essential to practice respect and caution.

Places to Eat

If the thought of sharks hasn’t scared you off, here are a few of my favorite places to grab a bite in New Smyrna. “The Garlic” was a standout for me—the whole place felt like stepping into a cozy movie scene. My boyfriend and I were seated in a small bungalow-style room that felt like a treehouse. It was one of the most memorable dinners I’ve had, with amazing service. If you’re a fan of seasoned food and garlic, it’s a must. Another great spot was “SoNapa,” perfect for a special night out. The food was incredible, and if you love fresh bread, this place is a win! We stayed on the beach and often enjoyed meals in, which was just as lovely.

Places to Stay

We stayed in an Airbnb located in Sea Coast Gardens, which I highly recommend. Waking up to the sunrise through big bay windows was breathtaking—it felt like being in the Caribbean. With two pools and a short walk to the beach, it was ideal. The rate was reasonable at $218 a night, and we hope to return.

  • A must for me was shark fishing. Do you get sea sick? Do you love sharks and not want to harm them? I had the experience of shark fishing while here from the beach! It is a tag and release only. Bring bug spray because the bugs can be a pain at night.
